The Style & Beauty Academy, an initiative by PSM Charity, is transforming the lives of young mothers and youth under 25 in Uganda’s Kampala, Wakiso, and Kiboga districts. In a country where over 70% of the population is under 25 and youth unemployment rates are among the highest in the world, young women and mothers are particularly vulnerable to cycles of poverty, often left without the skills or resources needed to secure a sustainable livelihood.
Our Academy addresses this critical challenge by offering free, high-quality vocational training in fashion design, tailoring, and hairdressing. Participants undergo an intensive 3-month program where they gain hands-on experience in these trades and learn essential business management skills. But our work doesn’t stop there. Each graduate receives a starter kit, seed capital, and ongoing mentorship to launch their own ventures, ensuring that the training translates into tangible, life-changing opportunities.
We’ve adopted a unique peer-to-peer model to amplify our impact: Every graduate commits to training four other young women or mothers, expanding the reach of our program and creating a ripple effect of empowerment throughout the community. Through this model, we aim to foster economic self-sufficiency, reduce reliance on aid, and inspire long-term community development.
Our goals are ambitious but achievable: a 70% employment and business creation rate among graduates within three months of program completion, a 50% increase in income for participants within six months, and the establishment of a collaborative production and sales network for graduates. We also organize community events to showcase the impact of our work and inspire collective support.
