UNICEF upscaling response in Gaza as ceasefire talks progress

by Australian Committee For UNICEF Limited

The long-awaited ceasefire offers a crucial opportunity for UNICEF to launch a massive humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip.

UNICEF is assembling quickly to scale up our humanitarian response in Gaza for the start of the ceasefire. With approximately 90% of Gaza displaced, humanitarian needs are colossal, and urgent work must begin to restore essential services across Gaza to help families recover.

In collaboration with local partners, we are ready to reach children and families with lifesaving supplies and services across water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), food, medical care, education and psychosocial support.
We urgently need your support to save lives and help children recover.

Situation on the ground:

A ceasefire was announced between parties in Gaza on January 15, 2025.

1.1 million children in need of humanitarian aid.

Almost 1 million children are displaced from their homes.

At least 14,500 children dead, tens of thousands of children more injured, an estimated 17,000 children unaccompanied or separated from their parents

Less than half of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are functional, water production is at less than 25 per cent capacity and 95 per cent of Gaza’s school buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

What donations to UNICEF support:

WASH: Provide clean water and hygiene kits, repair and restore water systems and increase access to sanitation and hygiene facilities.

HEALTH: Supply medical provisions and services (including immunisations for polio and measles), and nutritional support.

CHILD PROTECTION: Offer community-based psychosocial support and services for children and families.

EDUCATION: Support the opening of schools for displaced students and provide learning resources.

We ask for your support to help UNICEF provide much needed save the lives and help children, women and families recover.
