UNHCR Appeal for Sudan Emergency

by United Kingdom for UNHCR

The escalating violence across Sudan since April 2023 has turned the country’s humanitarian crisis into a full-blown catastrophe. A staggering 10.2 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan.

Sudan is now the country with the largest number of displaced people and the largest child displacement crisis in the world, accompanied by devastating news that as of August 2024 famine has been confirmed in Sudan and camps for forcibly displaced people.

“The warning signs were there for months, now we face the grim reality of famine in Sudan. Such a tragedy for civilians caught in the conflict – many of whom have been displaced multiple times. The brutal war must end, and humanitarians need access to deliver urgently needed aid.” Mamadou Dian Balde, Regional Refugee Coordinator for the Sudan Situation and Director of the East and Horn of Africa and Great Lakes Region, UNHCR.

For more than a year, the Sudanese people have endured horrific violence as the conflict rages on without resolution. Since April last year, over 10 million people have been displaced within Sudan and beyond its borders – an average of 20,000 people every day. They have faced unspeakable violence, forced to leave their homes, jobs and often they loved ones behind. Now, famine has hit the most vulnerable in Zamzam camp, North Darfur and millions more are at risk of facing famine in the country.

UNHCR, along with the international community is urging an end to the conflict and immediate humanitarian access to the most affected by this conflict. We are delivering life-saving aid across Sudan and neighbouring countries and providing protection and psychosocial support to people forced to flee.

Your support is crucial to help scale up our response and protect families who require life-saving aid. Thank you.
