UNHCR Appeal for Sudan Emergency

by United Kingdom for UNHCR

The escalating violence across Sudan since April 2023 has turned the country’s humanitarian crisis into a full-blown catastrophe. A staggering 8.3 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan. More than 13,000 people have been killed and more than 33,000 injured.
Sudan is now the country with the largest number of displaced people and the largest child displacement crisis in the world.

Human rights abuses, including gender-based violence, have been reported. There are food, water, and fuel shortages, blackouts, communication disruptions, and looting. Healthcare systems are on the verge of collapse, with power outages, dwindling supplies, and infrastructure damage to hospitals, making it extremely difficult to provide any proper medical care. 17.7 million people are facing acute hunger, 4.9 million in emergency levels.

UNHCR is in the region distributing lifesaving shelter and core relief items to those forced to flee – shelters, household items, clean water and sanitation facilities, healthcare, and education support – to refugees and other displaced people.

So far, UNHCR only has 10% of the funding it needs to meet the demands for the Sudan situation emergency. This leaves a funding gap of 90%.

With no end to the violence in sight, people are desperately seeking safety and protection, both inside Sudan and in bordering countries such as Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the Central African Republic so this demand is likely to grow, as well as the demand for gender-based violence (GBV) services and support for those affected by sexual violence. All six of the UNHCR country operations involved were already severely underfunded and the new emergency has created significant additional needs, affecting their ability to adequately respond to the enlarged population of forcibly displaced people.

Your support is crucial to help scale up our response and protect families who require life-saving aid. Thank you.
