397-KODA (The Rural Schools Transformation Network)- Mentorship Program

by Turkish Philanthropy Funds

KODA is piloting the Social Emotional Learning Program to support the social-emotional development of 40 rural secondary-school students.

During the second semester (16 weeks), two student groups will attend either an in-school or an after-school program. They will have 2 sessions weekly and meet with their counseling teacher or KODA trainers.
Both groups will implement the SED Program specifically designed for rural conditions and focus on forming social-emotional skills. These are also known as 21st-century life skills and are self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, communication, and responsible decision-making.
All sessions of the program start with the “Circle Activity” and students sit in a circle to share how they are feeling. Then activities start and all are practice-based. Each session ends with a reflection period to allow students space to talk about their thoughts and learn from the activity.

Through supporting a pedagogical educational approach, the SED program will equip rural students with skills to best adapt, respond to and benefit from their unknown futures in the ever-changing 21st century.

Upon completion of the pilot study, two guidebooks for in-school and after-school implementation will be prepared and disseminated with all rural school teachers across Turkey, thereby extending the program’s social impact further.

In order to improve the educational outcomes for children living in rural areas, it is crucial that they are able to explore their surroundings and develop emotional awareness. Your support for our Social Emotional Learning Program, which comprises of 28 modules spread over a period of 16 weeks, will enable these children to receive a more comprehensive education.

The cost of supporting 1 rural student’s social-emotional development is approximately $500.

This amount includes:

●55%: Trainer (delivering the program)

●18%: Field Expenses (i.e., transportation, activity materials)

●17%: 2 Guidebooks for Teachers

●10%: Monitoring and Evaluation (to ensure social impact)

The participation cost for 1 child living in villages and rural neighborhoods is $500.

Participation of 1 child in the 1-week program costs $30.
