Support 100 Children and Youths with Disabilities and Their Communities in Rural Uganda
by VILLAGE VISION CARESummary
Village Vision Care (VVC) seeks support to empower 100 children and youths with disabilities in Kyanamukaaka, Uganda, along with their families and communities. Many of these children face daily barriers such as lack of mobility, limited access to education, social stigma, and extreme poverty. This project provides mobility devices, water access, practical skills training, and community awareness programs, promoting inclusion, self-reliance, and long-term resilience.
The Challenge
Children and youths with disabilities in rural Uganda face compounded challenges:
Many children cannot walk long distances to school or water points due to lack of wheelchairs, crutches, or other assistive devices.
Only 2% of primary school learners nationally are children with disabilities, though 16% of children have disabilities (World Bank, 2020). Schools lack ramps, assistive devices, and trained teachers.
Families struggle to provide basic needs while caring for children with disabilities. Safe water, hygiene, and food are often inaccessible, with 38% of rural Ugandans lacking clean water (All Africa, 2025).
Misconceptions about disabilities limit children’s participation in school, community life, and local economic activities (UNICEF Uganda, 2019).
Without intervention, these children risk exclusion, poor health, and lifelong dependency, while families and communities continue to bear heavy burdens.
Our Solution
This one-year project addresses immediate needs and long-term sustainability through a holistic approach:
Assistive Devices: 25 wheelchairs ($500 each), 50 crutches/walking aids ($100 per set) to restore mobility and dignity.
Water Access: 50 small household water tanks ($250 each) for rainwater harvesting, reducing long walks for water.
Skills Training: Practical income-generating skills such as shoemaking, herbal jelly production, and coffee preparation, with 100 youths receiving tools and consumables ($200 per youth).
Community Awareness & Inclusion: 20 sessions ($500 per session) to reduce stigma, promote acceptance, and build supportive networks.
Education & Learning Materials: Books, sensory tools, and adaptive resources for 100 children ($150 per child).
Health & Nutrition Support: Nutritious meals, hygiene kits, and basic medical check-ups for 100 children ($150 per child).
Small Infrastructure: Ramps and minor water collection improvements ($25,000 total).
Monitoring & Evaluation: Track progress, gather reports, ensure accountability ($10,000).
Project Administration & Miscellaneous: Staff, transport, communications, logistics ($25,000).
Total Budget: $150,000

Your support transforms lives, restores dignity, and promotes inclusion. Every donation directly helps children and youths with disabilities gain mobility, skills, and opportunities while empowering their families and communities.
Monitoring & Accountability
VVC will track school attendance, mobility aid use, skills acquisition, and family well-being through regular follow-ups. Donors will receive progress reports, photos (with consent), and updates on community awareness and skills training outcomes.
Sustainability Plan
Assistive devices, skill kits, and water tanks empower children and families to continue benefiting long after project completion. Skills training and awareness programs ensure ongoing economic and social inclusion. Infrastructure improvements are maintained locally with community ownership.
Risk Management
Potential risks such as supply delays or skill adoption challenges will be mitigated through local partnerships, monitoring, coaching, and adaptive contingency plans. Regular community engagement ensures risks are identified early and addressed efficiently.
