Poverty rate among the youth, especially mono parental homes during the corona virus pandemic in Cameroon rose beyond expectations. Single parents left with almost nothing to raise their children and many of them found themselves isolated and left to their fate. Girl children in such homes easily get caught by unwanted pregnancies. In 2020 GivHOPE Africa had to rescue a dozen single nursing girls entangled for months in hospitals with their babies for unpaid bills and related delivery expenditures. There was one case that drew GivHOPE attention: a single nursing mom with girl triplets. Kimura Loriva is her name. Her triplets are 20 months old and since their birth, GivHOPE has been their care giver and care taker in all counts. She lives in a slum with her triplets. GivHOPE laid the first construction stone for a 3-bedroom house for Kimura and her triplets on December 7th 2021.
Due to the increase number of single nursing girls held captive in health centers and hospitals around the country like Kimura, GivHOPE Africa has decided to make of this cause, its own. Right now, several other cases are pending Board’s approval.
Project Details:
A. Project Development Objective (PDO)
The PDO is to help single nursing mothers cope with their situation through: (i) Freeing them from the hospitals where they are held captive for unpaid bills, (ii) Taking care of their babies and themselves and (iii) Finding shelter for those on the street. The PDO Level Indicators Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) include:
a) Increase in the number of targeted groups rescued from the health centers; and
b) Beneficiary satisfaction rate with the quality of project-supported assets and services.
B. The project consists of surveying the health centers and hospitals in the country to find urgent cases of health refugees and address their profound needs, starting by settling their health care unpaid bills as for the health centers to release them. Once at home or for those who live on the street, finding them a shelter and caring for their basic needs. GivHOPE Africa wants to give these girls a second chance: It will provide support for them to normally raise their upbringing. Another project thrust expected to be transformational is encouraging those who have skills to go back to school or to vocational training. Finally, the project design is predicated on a multi-pronged approach with the following areas of focus:
a) GivHOPE priority is to make sure that these single nursing girls have access to their basic needs (Health/education, nutrition, shelter). b) Selected geographical areas: Project support will be focused on areas where extreme poverty hits the most. Yaoundé and some remote areas are paramount. The project interventions will be strategic and closely coordinated with the partnering health centers, hospitals and the traditional rulers. The project will seek to complement and enhance the support to these girls through various GivHOPE activities such as income generating activities and family planning. Finally, the project will reinforce and optimize its financing requirements, as well as its overall management capacity with new approach to seek partnerships and sponsorships.
Project Description
The project has three components structured around some core activities: (i) Settling the bills in order to releasing the babies and their mothers from the health facilities, (ii) Building shelters for those on the street and caring for their basic needs and (iii) Project results, implementation, supervision, evaluation and monitoring.
C. Settling the unpaid bills (50,000.00 US$): This component will lay emphasis on making sure that single nursing girls under GivHOPE care are dealt with. This component will provide the basic needs to the babies and their mothers (Nutrition, transportation, shelter, health care, clothing, etc.). The rationale is to provide improved universal access to common services to its residents.
GivHOPE will mostly rely on the traditional rulers to identify their priorities emphasizing on single nursing moms’ health issues. GivHOPE options must be consistent with national plans in health sectors to avoid any duplication of efforts.
Project results, implementation, supervision, evaluation and monitoring (30,000 US$): Based on the lessons learned from 2020 to date, the project will implement innovative monitoring arrangements. For example, GivHOPE will create a computerized database that will measure progress on outputs and outcomes for the evolution of the babies and their mothers at the end of every fiscal year. GivHOPE might also carry out interviews or surveys to measure the impact on the beneficiaries, hospitals and health centers heads and living parents. The project will capture progress in the implementation of basic services.
