The Challenge:
In 2021, the second wave of COVID-19 swept across India, leaving families in turmoil. Hospitals were overwhelmed, livelihoods vanished overnight, and many struggled to access even the most basic necessities like food, healthcare, and reliable information. Amid this uncertainty, rural communities were hit the hardest, with limited resources to navigate the crisis.
The Solution:
In the wake of this crisis, The Desai Foundation, together with S.P. Hinduja Banque Privée, stepped in to support communities in need. They launched the Heroes for Humanity program, bringing together and training 500 dedicated individuals to serve as community facilitators. These Heroes became trusted voices and helping hands in their villages, providing essential healthcare information, guiding people through COVID-19 care and vaccination, distributing much-needed supplies, and promoting better health and hygiene practices.
The Lasting Impact:
The Heroes for Humanity program has made a significant and lasting difference in the lives of countless individuals across India. To date, it has:
-Reached 3,400+ communities
-2.7 million people supported through HelpDesk services
-75,000+ children attended the Bal Health Mela
-333,000+ children benefited from Primary Health & Hygiene programs
-121,075+ adults participated in health seminars and camps
-16,000+ students trained in basic computer skills
-34,000+ women received vocational training
-11,000+ women taught sewing skills
-23,000+ women impacted through gynecological health camps
Moving forward, the Heroes for Humanity program remains deeply committed to its mission of creating lasting change. With a focus on providing ongoing support, education, and raising awareness, the program continues to serve communities in need. Over 500+ Heroes have already impacted more than 6 million lives, delivering vital services across 8 states, 16 districts, and 3,500 villages. Their efforts ensure that help reaches the most vulnerable, making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.
