Myanmar Earthquake - 6 Million Children in Danger

efter Australian Committee For UNICEF Limited

On 28 March, a powerful 7.7 earthquake struck in the early afternoon, with a 6.4 magnitude earthquake following just two minutes later. Strong tremors were felt over 1,300 kilometres away in Bangkok, Thailand with buildings collapsing and lives lost. The force of the earthquake was devastating and the impact on children and families is only just emerging.

The situation on the ground is evolving rapidly as rescue teams search for survivors. The earthquakes come on top of an already desperate situation. Myanmar is now in its fourth year of escalating conflict, with millions of children already living in fear, displacement and poverty.

Multiple overlapping crises are affecting children, including natural disasters, disease outbreaks, food insecurity, inflation, loss of livelihoods, electricity shortages, interrupted or limited Internet and telecommunications services, and disrupted public services.

Our teams are on the ground in affected areas, assessing the impact and preparing to support the humanitarian response.

Even in the face of an escalating crisis in Myanmar, UNICEF continues to deliver for every child, no matter what.
• $100 could provide 16,667 water purification tablets, each able to create up to 5 litres of clean drinking water.
• $150 could help provide 14,285 sachets of nutrient powder for children.
• $494 could help provide two ‘School-in-a-Boxes' so 80 children can continue their education.
