Plant 40,000 Native Trees with Local Farmers on Uganda-Owned Farms

op VILLAGE VISION CARE

Summary
Village Vision Care (VVC) is leading a large-scale reforestation and community empowerment project to plant 40,000 native trees on Ugandan-owned farms in Masaka rule and Masaka city District, Kalangala District, Kyotera District, Sembabule District, Kalungu District, Lwengo District, Raki District, Lyantonde District, Bukomamsimbi District and surrounding regions. Uganda’s rainfall patterns have changed drastically due to deforestation and land degradation. Forest cover has fallen from 24% in the 1990s to around 13% in 2022, and Uganda continues to lose about 2.3% of its forests each year. These changes are affecting food security, water sources, and rural livelihoods.

Through this project, VVC will restore degraded land, protect water sources, and empower smallholder farmers by integrating native trees into productive farm systems.

We will work with local communities, women’s groups, and youth cooperatives to produce, plant, and care for native species like Musizi, Mvule, Mahogany, and Grevillea and others. Each tree will be maintained for four years to ensure survival and long-term impact.

Challenge
Uganda faces severe deforestation and climate instability. Changing rainfall patterns have disrupted farming seasons, caused crop failures, and led to drying rivers and wetlands. Poor rural communities, especially women and youth, bear the greatest burden and often lack access to sustainable income opportunities linked to environmental conservation.

Solution
VVC will pay and train local men and women to grow, plant, and maintain native trees on their own land and in community watershed zones.
This project will:

1. Create local green jobs in tree nurseries and reforestation work.

2. Restore biological corridors around rivers, springs, and farmlands.

3. Capture an estimated 40,000 tons of CO₂ over time.

4. Rebuild soils and reduce erosion.

5. Improve rainfall reliability and restore local micro-climates.

Long-Term Impact
40,000 trees planted and maintained for at least four years.

150+ smallholder farmers directly participating.

100+ youth and women earning fair wages through nursery, planting, and maintenance work.

60+ hectares of degraded land restored.

Increased biodiversity, improved water sources, and more stable rainfall patterns.

Contribution to Uganda’s National Forest and Landscape Restoration Plan and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 13, 15, 1, and 5).
