Hurricane Melissa: Children in the Caribbean Need Your Help
par Australian Committee For UNICEF LimitedHurricane Melissa is approaching Jamaica and Haiti with winds up to 100 mph (155 km/h) and life-threatening rainfall, flooding, and landslides. UNICEF estimates that at least 1.6 million children across the Caribbean are at risk, including 700,000 children in Jamaica alone.
Caribbean countries, including Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, are expected to endure several days of intense weather that could disrupt basic services, especially in vulnerable coastal areas. UNICEF teams are already on the ground taking urgent action in Barbados and Panama to Jamaica and Cuba:
• Prepositioning safe water, hygiene kits, tents, and medical supplies across Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba.
• Providing emergency cash support to thousands of vulnerable families.
• Leading coordination for health, nutrition, child protection, and education to safeguard children before and after the storm.
UNICEF’s work is 100% funded by donors. To deliver this life-saving aid, we rely on the support of employees, teams, and corporates around the world.
