Educate Students from Low Income Families In India - Gift Education with scholarship support
by Women's Education and Economic Development SocietyUPDATE:
This academic year 2024-25, we awarded scholarships to 178 underprivileged students from low-income families. Additionally, several deserving college students received comprehensive scholarships to cover their fees for all semesters. We remain committed to continuing this essential support for these deserving students. The impact of our scholarship initiative is evident, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the generous donors who have made this meaningful endeavor possible.
ISSUE STATEMENT:
In the vibrant districts of Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and Tiruvallur on the outskirts of Chennai, there exists a deep-rooted community of Native people who have persevered through generations in economically challenging circumstances. Many among them are engaged in unorganized work, their daily wages precariously dependent on the vagaries of their labor. The historical lack of access to education has constrained their opportunities, but they now aspire for a brighter future for their children, recognizing that quality education is the key to breaking the cycle of hardship.
While parents strive to send their children to private schools, they often encounter a daunting challenge as their children advance to secondary classes, where the cost of education escalates. Simultaneously, those from extremely impoverished backgrounds must turn to government/public schools, struggling to afford even the most basic educational necessities, such as uniforms, bags, and essential materials like guidebooks and notebooks.
For these students, the dream of pursuing higher education is overshadowed by the grim economic realities they face. Instead of advancing to college after completing their school education, many are compelled to join the workforce in places like supermarkets and textile shops.
ACTION PLAN:
Recognizing this widespread issue impacting the Native people in Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and Tiruvallur, particularly intensified by the economic challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, WEEDS is committed to addressing this challenge. We aim to reduce the alarming rate of school and college dropouts by providing essential support to parents and students. Our initiative entails covering a portion of school and college fees, thereby alleviating the financial burden on low-income families.
Through our education scholarship program, students will be able to concentrate on their studies without the constant worry of impending fees. Moreover, we endeavor to inspire parents with hope for a better life for their children, nurturing a commitment to education within low-income families.
IMPACT/RESULTS:
Our support will serve as a lifeline for students, ensuring that their education continues uninterrupted. We may not cover the entire academic year's fees, but our contribution serves as a beacon guiding low-income families towards overcoming financial obstacles. This initiative is poised to motivate both parents and students, instilling in them a renewed belief in the power of education.
The impact of this support will be profound for students hailing from economically weaker families residing in Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, India.
In the recent academic year 2024-25, we have supported 178 students, enabling them to pay their fees and acquire essential school supplies like uniforms, bags, notebooks, and guidebooks.
And we are committed to extending our sponsorship in this new academic year 2025-26 to both the existing students and new candidates in need. Our scholarship program isn't just a one-time gesture; it's a sustained commitment to support these students throughout their higher education journey. We closely monitor their progress and provide assistance every step of the way to ensure their success.
Our "Education Scholarship Support" program is unique as it extends beyond financial assistance. Our corporate volunteers dedicate their weekends to teach and mentor scholarship students, equipping them with essential social skills.
The combined impact of our scholarship support and mentoring sessions is evident in the academic achievements of our students.
