Mediterranean Storm Daniel passed through eastern Libya over the weekend of Sept. 9, 2023, bringing heavy rainfall and flooding that resulted in large-scale destruction.
On Sept. 11, 2023, two dams collapsed, sending 1 billion cubic feet of water into already inundated areas. The eastern city of Derna, home to around 100,000 people, was hit worst.
At least 4,000 people died, and more than 18,500 houses are estimated to have been destroyed or damaged, which is equal to 7% of the country’s housing stock.
