We are living through high levels of forcible displacements. Conflicts are causing refugee camps to overflow with people in dire need of assistance. In Myanmar, people have been fleeing violence and persecution for Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh since 2017. The total refugee count in the area is estimated to be over 1.2 million. A significant percentage are older people.
Abu Taher, an older Rohingya man, lives in Cox’s Bazar with his family. They were forced to leave everything behind after they were brutally attacked and had their home burned by the Myanmar military. Abu Taher was eventually introduced to our Age-Friendly Spaces where his eye condition was diagnosed, and he was brought to the camp hospital for a restorative operation.
Your donation can help us continue our work in refugee camps around the world by:
• Establishing specialized spaces for older people that provide health care, psychosocial support, and sanitation facilities.
• Training community health workers on health protection messages for older people.
• Providing clean water and shelter from extreme heat.
• Advocate for ensuring that the needs of older people in refugee camps are recognized.
HelpAge USA is a non-profit that sees a world in which the contributions of older people are recognized, and there is no age limit on the opportunity for a healthy, safe, and secure life.
HelpAge USA champions the dignity and potential of older people around the world. We work with HelpAge Global Network partners in over 80 countries to provide disaster assistance. Facilitate health care. Help end discrimination and violence. Develop pathways to income security. And we conduct research and advocate for the inclusion of older people in policies and programs that typically overlook them.
