Support Oxfam's Emergency Response Fund: Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar and Bangladesh

by OXFAM-AMERICA INC

At any given time, Oxfam is responding to over 30 emergency situations around the world. Right now, Oxfam is responding to Cyclone Mocha.

On May 14th, 2023, Cyclone Mocha crossed Myanmar and Bangladesh coasts. Myanmar was hit hardest. Before the cyclone, an estimated 6 million people were already in humanitarian need in the states where the cyclone hit in Myanmar. The needs of the community for essentials like shelter, clean water, sanitation will only rise. Oxfam is working with partners to deliver life-saving assistance including safety equipment, clean water, sanitation, food, and shelter for people in the cyclone’s path.

In MYANMAR, winds of up to 130 miles per hour are estimated to have affected 500,000 people as electricity and mobile communications are down. Early reports that 8 people have died, and that thousands of internally displaced persons in Rakhine have been very hard hit by the destruction of infrastructure, where they have been living in camps.

In BANGLADESH, initial assessments from authorities estimate 334,620 people have been affected by the storm in Cox’s Bazar. More than 750,000 people have been evacuated to cyclone shelters. The affected area is close to Teknaf, home to one million Rohingya refugees, where the cyclone left a trail of destruction, uprooting trees, and damaging homes, power lines and other structures.

Oxfam’s main relief efforts will focus on our area of expertise in providing:
- shelter
- food and safe water
- sanitation supplies
- public health support (to help prevent the spread of water-borne diseases)

Oxfam and partners are continuing to establish an overview of humanitarian needs, as well as long term needs and will continue to provide updates as we respond.
