February 24, 2023 marks one year since the war started in Ukraine. Nearly 18 million people are still in need in the country, including 6 million displaced persons. It is also estimated that one third of households are food insecure and that 13 million people need water and sanitation assistance.
Many people have lost their jobs and suffered severe damages to their homes, and property. The main sources of livelihoods – agriculture and employment in factories – have been significantly disrupted. Regular waves of attacks on energy infrastructure continue to cause destruction and leave millions with no electricity, disrupting water supply and heating systems, while temperatures have fallen below zero in most parts of the country.
Oxfam supports local and national organizations and local authorities in neighboring countries to ensure that Ukrainian refugees receive the support they need as they seek safety for themselves and their families, with a focus on:
• Supporting local authorities in scaling up Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in border crossings, transit and reception centers, with special attention to the needs of women and girls, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ and ethnic minority refugees
• Facilitating refugees’ access to information about their rights and available services and developing safe protection routes
• Delivering cash vouchers to families to meet their critical needs, including food and safe shelter
• Deploying mobile teams specializing in legal aid and psychosocial support
• Education and outreach programs for local authorities, including specialized training for police and staff who work in the local judiciary system on how to resolve cases of sexual violence and other issues important to ensuring a gender-responsive humanitarian relief effort
