Oxfam is stepping up relief efforts in response to the devastating flooding in Pakistan. Homes, farms and infrastructure have been swept away in devasting floods, and the year's cotton crop, so vital to the economy of the country, has been destroyed. The Pakistan government has described the flood as a ‘climate induced humanitarian crisis of epic proportions.’
Pakistan has declared a national emergency with more than 33 million people, or 15 percent of the population, affected; more than 1,000 people killed; a million homes and 4.9 million acres of crop land destroyed. Oxfam and partners are on the ground helping impacted populations maintain their rights in dignity in the crisis.
With your support Oxfam and local partners can support 25,000 families and households affected by the floods through:
• emergency food packages and clean drinking water to families in need
• temporary shelter to families who have been displaced or whose homes and farmland have been swept away
• personal hygiene kits to help people protect themselves from deadly diseases that resides in flood water
• economic support through rapid, flexible cash assistance
• strengthened local humanitarian leadership, so that local partners in Pakistan are better able to respond quickly to the crisis, to help rebuild, and to be better prepared to respond in the future
• climate advocacy, towards necessary emissions reductions and building resilience and adaptation in the face of compound disasters
In a crisis such as this, women and girls, the elderly, people with disabilities, and other marginalized people will suffer the worst.
