Recent statistics from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) in 2023 highlight both progress and ongoing challenges in girls' education in Turkiye. The literacy rate for the younger generation (up to 25 years of age) has risen significantly from 86.9% in 2009 to 96% today, yet 1.5 million women remain illiterate, and 4.26 million literate women have no formal diplomas.
The average years of schooling reflect a persistent gender gap, with girls averaging 8.6 years of education compared to boys at 10.1 years. In high school, there are 7.8 million girls enrolled compared to 10 million boys. However, once girls are given the opportunity to complete high school, they excel at the university level, with 6,083,936 female students enrolled versus 6,479,411 male students.
The Association for Supporting Contemporary Life (CYDD) plays a crucial role in addressing these gaps by empowering girls through education. Their efforts have sparked a movement for sustainable change, helping to build a stronger, more independent community of Turkish women.
