UNHCR Emergency in Yemen

by United Kingdom for UNHCR

Yemen is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. After more than 8 years of conflict and economic collapse, millions of displaced Yemenis are only a step away from famine. Please help us reach these families with life-saving aid.

This is a man-made crisis, where the civilian population is paying the highest price. This conflict can and must stop, ending it must be a top priority. Yemen faces a crisis of protection and protracted displacement where millions of people – including Yemenis, refugees and asylum seekers – suffer the effects of war, climate shocks, economic deterioration, and disrupted services. The economy, the society, the healthcare system, the access to food, all have been ripped apart, pushing civilians to the brink.

Some 4.5 million people have been forcibly displaced since the beginning of the conflict in Yemen, tearing them away from their homes and loved ones and exposing them to heightened risks, leaving them in an extremely vulnerable state to all kind of risks. The situation continues to deteriate and nearly 10,000 Yemenis have fled their homes in the first months of 2023.

The current absence of an official truce and the fragile political and security situation is leaving people’s lives in limbo. The uncertainty – there is no formal peace deal in place, but conflict hasn’t restarted - is wreaking havoc on the economy and all aspects of life. Humanitarian workers must have safe, unhindered and sustainable access to people in need. It is estimated that the 74% of displaced people in Yemen are women and children and they need specialized assistance.

UNHCR is leading a coordinated effort across the region to protect Yemenis who have been forced to flee. This includes emergency relief and shelter for those escaping escalations in the conflict, and ongoing care such as education and healthcare. At this critical time, humanitarian action and the support of the international community to save lives and alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations across Yemen remains imperative. Regional and international actors must commit to ending this conflict.

Unless urgent action is taken, more lives will be lost. Your help cannot wait.
