Rural Students Computer Literacy Training Programme in India - Computer skill Education
by Women's Education and Economic Development SocietyUpdated Achievement Report:
Thanks to the generous contributions from our corporate donors and CSR partners, WEEDS has successfully established computer labs in 3 middle schools (Karasangal, Athanachery, and Kovur villages in Kundrathur block, Kancheepuram district). Over 432 students now have access to computer education each year, guided by three dedicated trainers appointed by us.
We sincerely thank all donors whose support has illuminated the lives of these students. Your contributions are creating long-term impact.
Present Need:
Government schools across Tamil Nadu are now equipped with computers, but most lack of trainers to teach students. Without proper guidance, computer labs remain underutilized, leaving rural children without the digital skills needed for higher education and future jobs.
To address this gap, WEEDS seeks support to appoint and sustain trained computer educators in the 3 government schools where we are already working, and to expand the program to 2 additional schools — reaching a total of 5 schools.
Project Objectives:
- Provide computer education and life skills training to government school students.
- Equip children with digital literacy for higher studies and employability.
- Boost self-confidence, problem-solving, and communication skills through life skills sessions.
- Reduce dropout rates and motivate families to continue schooling.
- Strengthen public schools by ensuring quality, technology-based education.
Rationale:
Although many rural students now have access to computers, lack of training leaves them unable to use technology effectively. We’ve seen students choose computer science as a subject in higher secondary school without even basic knowledge—later struggling in college and settling for low-paying jobs.
By combining computer literacy with life skills, we aim to bridge this gap, preparing children from underserved communities to thrive in academics, careers, and society.
Implementation Plan:
- Trainers appointed and trained by WEEDS will visit schools regularly.
- Sessions include both computer lessons and life skills training (critical thinking, empathy, communication, decision-making, stress management, and financial literacy).
Duration: 5 years with continuous monitoring and support.
Beneficiaries: Government school students (Grades 6–8) from rural Kancheepuram district.
Budget to impact 5 schools :
Computer & Lifeskills Educator Salary: $150 per month (12 months): $ 9000 / Rs.7,83,000
Repairs and Maintenance: $500 / Rs.42000 (1 year)
We urge donors to utilize their Rewards, Volunteering Grants, Matching Grants, Employee Incentives, and share information about this project with their colleagues, friends, and family. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to empowering rural students with the tools they need for a brighter future.
