Morocco earthquake: children and families need your help

by SOS CHILDREN'S VILLAGES CANADA/VILLAGES D'ENFANTS SOS CANADA

Just before midnight on Friday, September 8, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the regions surrounding Marrakech, Morocco, causing extensive destruction, significant casualties and tragic loss of life.

More than 300,000 people have been devastatingly impacted by this disaster, among them over 100,000 children. SOS Children’s Villages is on the ground in Morocco and acting swiftly to launch an emergency response program to provide critical immediate support where it is needed most, although access to the affected areas is still difficult due to the rubble.

In addition to addressing urgent needs with vital support, such as cash and voucher assistance for essentials, food kits, mental and physical healthcare, clean drinking water, and warm clothing, our focus remains on protecting the most vulnerable – children who lost parental care or are at risk of losing parental care.

During emergencies, children without parental care are always the most vulnerable. The children are extremely scared and need urgent support to cope with their trauma.

“The children and young people have been through a traumatic experience. There are four psychologists and two volunteers in the field to give them the psychological support they need,” shared Ms. Samya El Mousti, National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Morocco.

SOS Children’s Villages Canada will be supporting SOS Morocco with our MAYDAY fund, an emergency fund set up for emergencies like this, when the duration and support needs to be flexible and delivered quickly.

Emergencies anywhere in the world harm the most vulnerable most. Please, if you are able, help vulnerable children and families today. Your contribution, big or small, can make a huge impact in their lives.

Thank you for your incredible generosity. Together, we can make a difference.
