Improving Foundational Learning for Slow and Struggling Learners – Advancing Education Equity
, Women's Education and Economic Development SocietyProject Summary:
This project aims to strengthen Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) skills among slow learner students in Grades 6th to 8th across selected 5 government schools in Tamil Nadu state,India. Many students in this age group have not acquired basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills, leading to poor academic performance and high dropout risks.
We propose to identify and support "focused learners"—students who need urgent academic support—through activity-based sessions and continuous progress tracking. This will ensure they build the core academic foundation necessary to succeed in higher grades.
Due to the large student population in government schools, teachers are often unable to provide individual attention to each student.
Objectives:
• Identify and assist students with Foundational Literacy and Numeracy learning gaps
• Improve reading comprehension and basic mathematic skills
• Assisting students in acquiring foundational skills in reading, writing, and basic Tamil, English, and Mathematics.
• Supporting schools by providing subject-specific teachers to focus on learners who need additional attention, thereby reducing the burden on individual teachers managing large classrooms
Key Activities:
• Baseline and endline assessments to measure learning growth
• Customized Foundational Literacy and Numeracy sessions for selected focused learners
• Regular student progress reviews and documentation
• Parent sensitization and involvement sessions
Expected Impact:
• 85% of focused learners show measurable improvement in reading and numeracy
• Improved student participation and confidence in classrooms
• Increased teacher capacity to support struggling learners
• Stronger community and parental involvement in education
