Children’s Emergency Fund- Afghanistan Earthquake Response
, SAVE THE CHILDREN-CANADA/AIDE A L'ENFANCE-CANADAOn Monday, September 1st, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks struck Afghanistan’s mountainous eastern region killing over 1,400 people and injuring 3,000 more. The worst affected areas are Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and Nuristan provinces.
Save the Children has been supporting communities and protecting children's rights across Afghanistan since 1976, including during periods of conflict and natural disasters.
Homes, hospitals and schools have been destroyed. Several roads are blocked to mountain villages, making it harder to reach families in need of support. Water sources have been damaged or are contaminated, and many families have lost their food stocks for the winter.
For communities in Afghanistan, this disaster comes on top of an ongoing economic crisis, consecutive droughts, flooding and widespread hunger, threatening children’s lives and futures.
Families urgently need food, water, safe shelter, medical care and hygiene support to prevent disease outbreaks. Children are terrified and need protection and mental health support, as well as getting back to learning as soon as possible.
Save the Children is already on the ground in the hardest-hit areas of Nangarhar and Kunar provinces. Our emergency response teams are providing critical medical care through mobile health units, distributing essential supplies, including:
• Hygiene kits
• Emergency shelter and repair materials
• Clean water and sanitation resources
• Educational kits to help restore a sense of normalcy for children
But we urgently need your support to reach more children and families.
Your donation to our Children’s Emergency Fund will help provide lifesaving aid – including medical care, shelter, clean water, and essential supplies – to children and families who have lost everything.
