The Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, organized by Filipino BC, is a vibrant and cherished celebration of Filipino heritage, honoring the legacy of Datu Lapu-Lapu, a historical figure known for his resilience and bravery in the face of Spanish colonization in the Philippines. The festival, held annually in the Sunset neighborhood of East Vancouver, brings together thousands of people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate Filipino culture through music, dance, art, and community gathering. It serves as a testament to the strength, pride, and interconnectedness of the Filipino community in British Columbia.

On April 26, 2025, tragedy struck during this beloved event, deeply impacting the community and resulting in devastating loss and grief. As the event was wrapping up, an individual drove an SUV into the crowd, resulting in 11 fatalities, as confirmed by the Vancouver Police Department, with many others suffering serious injuries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this time of unimaginable hardship.

In the wake of this tragedy, Filipino BC has partnered with United Way BC to establish the Kapwa Strong fund, a designated support system to assist those directly affected. KAPWA is a Filipino term that represents the profound sense of community, interconnectedness, and shared humanity. This spirit has been evident through the outpouring of support from across Vancouver and beyond, embodying the core values of solidarity and compassion that define the Filipino community.

Donations made through this Giving Opportunity will be directed specifically to Filipino BC to support individuals and families impacted by this tragedy. Funds will help cover immediate needs, including counseling services and funeral costs, and will also support long-term recovery through a grant-based system.Filipino BC will ensure that these designated funds are distributed thoughtfully and responsibly, prioritizing those most affected and in need.
