Responding to the Explosion in Beirut

/ International Medical Corps

On Tuesday, August 4, at about 6 p.m. local time, a massive explosion ripped through the port of Beirut, Lebanon, damaging much of the city. According to media reports, the blast killed at least 100 people and injured more than 4,000 others, while hundreds remain missing. The explosion—believed to have occurred in a warehouse storing thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate—was so powerful that it registered as a 3.3 magnitude earthquake in Beirut, and was felt as far away as Cyprus. With so many people buried under rubble or still missing, search-and-rescue missions continue.

As a result of the blast, hospitals—many of which sustained significant damage—are overwhelmed and struggling to provide care, especially as power outages interrupt services. Further complicating response efforts, COVID-19 was already straining the health system, as has an economic crisis that has been affecting millions throughout the country for much of the past year.

International Medical Corps has launched an emergency response, coordinating closely with the government and other responders to quickly provide help to hospitals, and to primary and secondary health facilities throughout the city. Our teams are mobilizing urgently needed supplies and deploying staff from unaffected health facilities to hospitals caring for patients, and are deploying mobile medical units to provide care to affected communities. We are also preparing to support mental health needs for those affected by this emergency—needs that we expect to continue and grow.

International Medical Corps has been on the ground in Lebanon since 2006, providing health services to Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese communities. Most recently, we have been responding to COVID-19 across the 59 health facilities we support. Though our offices were extensively damaged by the blast, our warehouse was not damaged and our team members are safe, continuing to work remotely to provide emergency and other services.

The blast has made a dire situation in Lebanon even worse, complicating an already extensive humanitarian crisis. We appreciate any support you can provide to help our teams address these urgent needs.

*Note for recurring donations: Once we have determined that the community can continue to respond to the after-effects of this emergency without us, we will scale back our response efforts. At that time, we will redirect your future donations to where it is needed most to help us respond to future outbreaks of conflict, disease or natural disasters.
