Since war erupted in Sudan in 2023, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières has adapted quickly to provide life-saving medical and humanitarian assistance, despite significant challenges. Intense fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has caused tens of thousands of casualties, displaced millions, and plunged the country into chaos.
Sudan’s fragile health system is overwhelmed by the destruction and looting of facilities, shortages of medical supplies, and underpaid, overworked staff. In Darfur, where ethnic-based killings are reported, most health facilities have collapsed, leaving people without critical supplies like vaccines, nutrition commodities, and HIV medications. Overcrowded camps and gathering sites further increase the risk of disease outbreaks, while those with chronic conditions struggle to access care. Cholera outbreaks, along with spikes in malaria and dengue fever, have compounded suffering across the country.
Right now, more than 1,400 Doctors Without Borders team member are on the ground in Sudan. We are providing surgical care, wound management, maternal care, pediatric care, malnutrition treatment, and basic health care in refugee camps and displacement sites. Between January and July 2025 alone, our teams carried out more than 530,000 outpatient consultations, delivered more than 14,600 babies, and provided more than 5,500 individual mental health consultations.
