Extreme Weather Season is Here: Help Americares Respond to the Changing Climate

efter AMERICARES FOUNDATION INC

The effects of climate change are here, and so are the health challenges caused by extreme weather:

Respiratory illness triggered by wildfire smoke,

Heart problems worsened by heat waves,

Infections spread by flood waters.

These health challenges call for a change in the way we respond. And when it comes to adapting, Americares is leading the way.

We’re bringing resources to clinics across the U.S. – and we're helping providers and patients adapt. We respond to extreme weather events around the world, establish long-term recovery projects and bring preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters.

With more intense hurricanes, unprecedented wildfires, record-breaking heatwaves and frequent flooding due to climate change, Americares has expanded its work to help health care providers protect the health of patients disproportionately affected.

Deaths from extreme heat are on the rise, droughts are threatening crops and food supplies, and changes in precipitation patterns are increasing vector-borne diseases (illnesses caused by parasites, viruses, and bacteria that are transmitted by vectors, such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas). While the impact is most pronounced in lower-income countries—threatening to roll back decades of progress in global health and poverty reduction—the climate crisis is an urgent global health crisis affecting communities worldwide.

Americares develops innovative global programming that addresses the health impacts of climate change. We work directly with health providers and clinic staff serving vulnerable patients on the front lines of the climate crisis to co-create solutions that give them the information, resources and plans to be ready the next time extreme weather strikes.

Americares' climate resilience work is focused on health equity and climate justice and is informed by decades of experience preparing communities with disaster-risk reduction training and disaster-preparedness boot camps, responding to climate-related emergencies and helping communities recover from major hurricanes and other extreme weather events.

Please support Americares in our efforts to focus on the changing climate and its impact to our health.
