The ACLU has a Plan for the Next Administration
por ACLU Foundation (AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION INC)While the ACLU is a non-partisan organization, we are clear-eyed about the challenges we will face with the next administration. And we have a plan: months ago, we created a series of memos (https://www.aclu.org/campaigns-initiatives/project2025) on the threats to civil rights and civil liberties that we could see under either candidate, Harris or Trump. From this research, we anticipate national threats to immigrants' and LGBTQ rights, reproductive freedom, DEI efforts, the freedom of the press, and the freedom to protest. Unfortunately, American voters likely will face greater challenges not only to cast a ballot but also to have votes counted.
During the last Trump administration, we created a community together to oppose these erosions to civil rights. For instance, in January 2017, we were the first organization to challenge his Muslim ban, bolstered by you, your companies, and your audiences. In 2018, when the ACLU went to court to challenge the inhumane practice of separating immigrant families at the border, you joined the outcry across the country. We called on you time and time again, and all of you and your leaders showed up.
The ACLU is in courts, in state legislatures, in Congress, and in your communities. We are ready and, along with our nationwide network of ACLU state affiliates, we are asking you to continue championing civil rights for everyone. Together we can:
- Protect millions of immigrants against mass deportation by bringing litigation and by
urging state governments to deny the federal government access to their law
enforcement agencies to detain or deport immigrants.
- Fight the federal government's targeting and silencing of critics. We expect the Trump
administration to use surveillance programs against its opponents and vulnerable
populations. We will go to court to stop efforts to breach privacy, discriminate based on
race or ethnicity, retaliate against dissenters, or silence protesters.
- Challenge any attempts to curtail our bodily autonomy, including reproductive freedom.
We will continue to work to protect access to ALL healthcare.
Thank you for your continued support.
