Positive Action in Housing pioneered the Room for Refugees Network in 2002, and since then the idea has spread across the UK. We are proud that it remains the longest running refugee hosting programme run by a registered charity in the UK or Western Europe.
We specialise in safe and compassionate refugee hosting for individuals and families facing emergency homelessness, offering a unique and essential lifeline during times of crisis.
The programme gained widespread attention and went “viral” in September 2015, establishing itself as a trusted and practical resource across the UK. In November 2018, we expanded internationally by launching our first hosting network in Chicago, Illinois, in partnership with a local refugee resettlement agency. Our goal is to replicate this success in other major cities around the world, spreading a message of compassion and practical support.
Room for Refugees embodies a human and compassionate approach to supporting refugees, providing an unmatched level of pastoral care. By sharing the resources we have in abundance in the Western world, we empower refugees to rebuild their lives with dignity and stability.
We are actively accepting registrations from potential hosts in Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Western Europe, Canada, and the U.S.** Our ambition is to expand partnerships with refugee organisations globally, strengthening the impact of our work.
So far, the programme has provided temporary shelter to hundreds of families and individuals, giving hope to thousands more. These placements allow displaced people to stabilise their lives, recover from trauma, and regain independence.
Do you have a spare room or more?
Could you offer temporary shelter to someone forced to flee their country, someone who currently has no means to support themselves?
If so, you could be a host with Room for Refugees.
We receive referrals from trusted organisations such as the British Red Cross, Refugee Council, and other established immigration and asylum advice agencies. Every referral is carefully assessed, and we do not offer placements to individuals with a history of criminality, violence, or substance abuse.
Our goal is to match guests seeking asylum in the UK with compassionate hosts who can offer a spare room. Placements can last as long or as short as you choose, and your involvement makes a life-changing difference.
If you’re interested in becoming a host, please read the information below and complete the online registration form.
Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of refugees, providing not just shelter, but hope and stability.
