Bladder cancer awareness creation among underserved women in India - Women Health Matters
op Women's Education and Economic Development SocietyPROJECT DETAILS :
Bladder cancer is the 10th most common cancer in the world, with more than half a million new cases reported each year. Despite widespread pervasiveness, awareness can be poor among the women in our project areas and many people only hear about bladder cancer for the first time at their diagnosis. We want to change this; and bring greater attention to the disease. If affected women diagnosed early the chances of survival 90% !
Many women in our kancheepuram and chennai suburb areas are not aware about the symptoms and early steps to prevent the bladder cancer.
Largely, the success of bladder cancer treatment and thus, survival is significantly impacted by a timely diagnosis. Raising awareness about bladder cancer amongst the women is a key step to identify the people affected by the disease, and to help ensure a timely diagnosis, better treatment outcomes and quality of life for all patients affected by bladder cancer. Yet bladder cancer is a forgotten disease we need to get people talking about it.
Every year during the bladder cancer awareness month - May we are conducting awareness sessions about the bladder cancer among women. Again this year we are conducting sessions in various places in chennai suburb - Kundrathur block, Kancheepuram district.
CAMPAIGN / AWARENESS CREATION AMONG WOMEN :
One of the main barriers surrounding diagnosis are the symptoms. Both symptoms and the way in which people respond to them can vary especially as some of the symptoms are not immediately obvious.
The similarity to the effects of a urinary tract infection (UTI) for example, diagnoses can be delayed. For some, the discovery of blood in their urine and the fact that any medical consultation requires them to talk about, and refer to, personal parts of their body can induce anxious, worried and embarrassed feelings. But while the vast majority of things we’re embarrassed about are harmless, bladder cancer symptoms might not be.
During our bladder cancer awareness program we want to spark conversations that drive awareness around the disease by focusing in on bladder cancer symptoms and overcoming any barriers to seeking a professional consultation.
