Goal: The aim is to empower and enhance the economic well-being of women in the peri-urban areas of Kancheepuram & Tiruvallur Districts.

Objectives : The primary objective is to establish 100 new Women Self Help Groups (each comprising 12-14 members) to facilitate the economic development of women and nurturing the growth of women entrepreneurs.

Institutional Capacity: WEEDS currently operates 1285 active Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu districts. However, there remain numerous areas in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts where SHGs have not been established. With your donation, we intend to form 100 new women SHGs, to be overseen by our dedicated WEEDS field staff under the guidance of women Board Members.

Time frame: The anticipated duration for achieving this objective is 1 year.

Project Description :
Awareness and Formation: Creating awareness among women in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur Districts about Self Help Groups (SHGs). The targeted regions for SHG formation are 5 specific blocks within these districts.

New SHGs Creation: Establishing 100 new SHGs, each comprising 12-14 members, among women who express interest in participating.

Project Management Structure: Appointing a Project Coordinator for overall project management and assigning two Program Managers, each responsible for a specific district. Program Managers will train and monitor the newly formed SHGs and oversee the implementation of planned activities.

Leadership within SHGs: Encouraging the SHG members to select two Representatives/Animators from each group to take on leadership roles.

Financial Literacy Training: Providing financial literacy training to SHG members, covering topics such as bank account management, savings, internal loan processes, budgeting, interest rates, debt management, and personal financial management.

Bank Account Opening: Facilitating the opening of bank accounts for each SHGs to formalize financial transactions.

Regular Group Meetings: Facilitating bi-weekly gatherings of SHG members at a designated member's house to discuss group activities, with Program Managers providing follow-up support.

Regular Follow-up and Internal Loan Provision: Conducting regular follow-ups for Six months to track group savings and internal loans. After this period, internal loans will be provided to individual SHG members, and repayment will be monitored by the group's Representative/Animator, aiding the assessment of each group's capacity in the Bank Linkage Program.

WEEDS Bank Linkage Program: Identifying successful groups based on internal loan repayments and linking them with banks through the Bank Linkage Program. This program involves partnerships with both Public and Private sector banks, enabling women to enhance their small-scale businesses.

Predicted Outcomes:

Formation of 100 New Self-Help Groups: The establishment of 100 new self-help groups, benefiting approximately 1200 women and fostering economic development.

Impact of Bank Linkage Program on SHG Women: Positive transformation of SHG women through participation in the bank linkage program, enhancing their financial capabilities.

Enhanced Financial Literacy: Empowering women with valuable financial literacy knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions about their economic well-being.

Emergence of New Women Entrepreneurs: The emergence of new women entrepreneurs and the further development of existing women-led small businesses within the community.

Financial Independence and Decision-Making: Women becoming pivotal figures in their families, making independent financial decisions that contribute to household stability.

Reduction in Domestic Violence: The economic empowerment of women leading to a reduction in domestic violence within families, as financial independence often correlates with increased autonomy and influence.

Sustainability and Long-Term Impact: The self-help groups, once formed, are anticipated to sustain themselves, yielding enduring impacts among group members, particularly through the sustained influence of our bank linkage program.

Integration of community women - Integration of women within the community, promoting inclusivity and community development.

Measurable Indicators :
- Number of newly established women SHGs.
- Impact on the number of women involved in the project.
- Number of Women initiating their own businesses.
- Number Women advancing their small-scale enterprises.
- Total amount of loans disbursed to women SHG members.
- Number of families impacted as indirect beneficiaries

Budget :

1. Self Help Group awareness session in 52 communities
To conduct 1 SHG awareness meeting = USD 117.5 / Rs.9752

2. Financial Literacy Training(FLT) for 100 newly formed SHGs
To conduct 1 FLT Training program = USD 18.5 / Rs.1500
