Rainwater harvesting using recharge-well structures is an excellent method for collecting and storing rainwater underground, thereby replenishing groundwater levels. A recharge well is a vertical structure designed to divert rainwater from the surface into the underground aquifer.
The process begins with selecting a suitable location for the recharge well; typically, an open area that receives ample rainfall and is free from potential sources of contamination is chosen. Before construction, a simple percolation test is conducted to assess the soil's permeability, ensuring it can effectively absorb and allow the rainwater to infiltrate the ground.
Subsequently, the recharge well is drilled, and a sediment chamber is constructed around it using cement rings, filter media, and a perforated cement cover placed over the rings. This setup effectively removes sediment and debris from the runoff water and prevents silt particles from clogging the well. To further filter the water, the recharge well or perforated pipe within the chamber is wrapped in geotextile fabric or green shade netting.
