Libya Flood Crisis | Children in Emergency

Extreme rainfall caused by Storm Daniel has caused devastating flooding, sweeping entire neighbourhoods into the sea.

On 11 September, Storm Daniel caused catastrophic flooding in eastern Libya. Two dams have collapsed under the pressure, sweeping entire neighbourhoods in the City of Derna into the sea.

Sadly, an estimated 5,000 people have died, and tens of thousands of people have been reported missing.

The floods have added fuel to an already challenging situation in Libya. Past conflict and a political crisis have significantly impacted health services, education and social protection. For those already displaced and in need, this disaster compounds the loss and suffering. Libya is also a route for families seeking asylum, many of whom would have been impacted by the floods.

UNICEF is working alongside our partners to deliver critical emergency supplies to children and their families affected by the unfolding crisis.

Your donation helps our teams deliver life-saving supplies to children in need.
• $82 could provide 24 emergency food ration packs containing 216 bars of ready-to-eat fortified food.
• $130 could provide 26,000 water purification tablets, each able to create up to 5 litres of clean drinking water.
• $311 could deliver a School-in-a-Box with enough education supplies to keep 40 students learning.

Children in emergencies often lose their homes, school and their loved ones. Their access to food, water and healthcare is affected, and although parents and caregivers are doing all they can to keep their children safe, devastatingly, many children are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

We can’t stop emergencies from happening, but we can ensure that more children survive. That means being on the ground, delivering life-saving support during emergencies and being there long after a crisis has struck to help restore vital health and nutrition programs.
