Another 8000 are displaced due to fires in Saskatchewan. Manitoba’s Premier acknowledged the provincewide state of emergency comes with fear, uncertainty and concern. There are currently 22 active wildfires in Manitoba, and there have been 102 already this year, far above the average for a typical year. There are 18 active wildfires in Saskatchewan, including 11 that are not currently under control.
These fires are not just burning forests; they are destroying homes, displacing thousands, and profoundly impacting the lives, land, and cultural heritage of numerous First Nations communities. Many of these communities are facing unimaginable challenges with limited resources, often feeling overlooked in the face of such widespread devastation.
We can help the people of Manitoba and Saskatchewan by supporting the Canadian Red Cross. The CRC have indicated that they are assisting those impacted by the wildfires with immediate and ongoing relief, and supporting evacuees and the communities hosting them.
