Responding to the Coronavirus Outbreak

par International Medical Corps

At the end of 2019, a cluster of respiratory illness cases was identified in the City of Wuhan, People’s Republic of China. The number of cases, now known as the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, has increased rapidly across the world raising global concern. As a result of the rapidly rising caseload, the rapid transmission and the potential impact of Coronavirus, on March 11, the World Health Organization declared the Coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, noting they expect to see the number of cases, number of deaths, and number of affected countries rise even higher.

International Medical Corps is responding to the COVID-19 outbreak with a global multi-pronged approach including: training and capacity building to protect frontline health workers; deploying medicines and supplies, including personal protective equipment; setting up screening and triage stations; providing case management; conducting community outreach and mental health support; and standing up an epidemic response team, ready to deploy upon request. Based on hot-spot areas and low-resource settings around the world including the US, International Medical Corps is working to ensure people receive the medical care they need while keeping health workers safe.

*Note for recurring donations: Once we have determined that the community can continue to respond to the after-effects of this emergency without us, we will scale back our response efforts. At that time, we will redirect your future donations to where it is needed most to help us respond to future outbreaks of conflict, disease or natural disasters.
