CHALLENGE:
In times of disaster, effective communication and coordination amongst various actors such as local officials, NGOs, companies, and volunteers are essential for effective relief and recovery efforts.
SOLUTION:
To solve this problem, TPF and Needs Map have teamed up to develop the “Disaster Response Map (Afet Haritasi)”, a digital platform that can track all actors providing support in real-time, to increase efficiency and minimize duplications in aid and action.
Before disasters:
This digital map will feed data from the Needs Map’s geographic information system (GIS) technology to create a network of disaster response tools across communities, institutions, and cities to identify urgent needs. This will allow local authorities, NGOs, the public sector, and various communities to coordinate quickly and take part in the relief efforts based on locations and types of responses of others. Additionally, capacity-building training on the usage of the platform will be delivered to communities, institutions, and volunteers at the neighborhood level.
After disasters:
Following the disaster, through the platform, location-based online forms about urgent needs will be filled out jointly by different actors to collect comprehensive and consistent information in one place. With this information, an online live dashboard that shows the region-based needs will be integrated into the map and this way, the humanitarian aid will be delivered to affected people quickly without the need for a warehouse to gather and collect. This cut through the extra time spent on logistics, sorting, and systematic problems in inter-institutional coordination.
LONG-TERM IMPACT:
The Disaster Response Map will ease communication among various actors and mobilize them swiftly to identify, and supply needs in the disaster-stricken regions of Turkey. This one-of-a-kind platform will centralize all disaster relief efforts in Turkey and will speed up the recovery efforts and resilience of affected communities.
