UNHCR Lebanon Emergency Response

par United Kingdom for UNHCR

Amid deadly aerial bombardments, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon is rapidly deteriorating. UK for UNHCR is appealing for urgent action to deliver life-saving humanitarian support and safeguard civilians affected by the escalating conflict.

The humanitarian consequences are devastating. Up to a million people have now been forced from their homes, fleeing through the night, and the number continues to grow. This is in a region that has already been devastated by war and a country that knows suffering all too well.

UNHCR is working in Lebanon to provide urgent assistance and protection to both Lebanese citizens and refugees affected by the escalating conflict.

You can help us continue delivering essential relief, including shelter materials, healthcare and psychosocial support to Lebanese and refugees affected by the crisis by donating to our emergency response. We have made core relief items like blankets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets and more available to authorities to rapid distribution to those in need.

UNHCR’s role

UNHCR is supporting the Government of Lebanon to protect and assist those affected by the conflict. UNHCR leads or co-leads the humanitarian response in the Protection, Shelter, Basic Assistance, Social Stability, Education and Health sectors.

Over 73,500 people have received core relief items, including mattresses, clothing and kitchen sets, since October 2023.

UNHCR is assessing, renovating and delivering core relief items for the 900 government-designated collective shelters, and working with the authorities to find safe shelter for all those without it.

We have expanded our hospital network, deploying trauma kits, prepositioning medical equipment, and covering the treatment for war-wounded refugees. Since 23 September, medical teams have assisted more than 10,000 individuals with emergency health services and provided psychosocial support, including psychological first aid, to 47,000 individuals

Over 70,000 people have benefited from targeted cash assistance since October 2023 and over 1,500 families with legal support since September 2024.

The window to prevent a full-scale humanitarian disaster is closing rapidly, with UN chief Antonio Gueterres warning of “the possibility of transforming Lebanon [into] another Gaza.” UNHCR is appealing for £82.8 million to assist 1 million displaced people in Lebanon through the end of 2024, as part of a wider UN appeal.

UNHCR stands ready to further support the people of Lebanon, the government-led humanitarian response, and the many refugees that the Lebanese have so generously hosted for years.
