A challenge facing education in Indonesia in an age where specific digital skills are required in the workforce is the level of competencies of high school teachers. Students graduating from their secondary education should have been able to acquire a skill set inclusive of familiarity with Computational thinking, coding, AI, and ML. However, levels of knowledge and confidence amongst teachers is limited and opportunities provided for their growth are limited and lack quality.
Prestasi Junior Indonesia (PJI), as an official partner of the Ministry of Education, continues to work with teachers to strengthen capacities to integrate digital learnings with the framework of the national curriculum. We have created a curriculum which is being has been applied for teacher professional development in the Province of Kepulauan Riau and opportunities exit for further teacher training.
PJI has developed a teacher training experience which has proven to be impactful and rewarding. Until now, more than 50 new lessons have been created, exhibiting integration of digital technology, which are relevant for inclusion in the national curriculum in subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.
Additional support would enable PJI to train more teachers who would then transfer this information to their students. Focusing on building teacher competencies is a sustainable approach in ensuring future classrooms are provided with the knowledge necessary to access good work.
