Pond restoration initiative to access clean water for 316 families in a village in India

par Women's Education and Economic Development Society

Project Description:
The Kaduvancheri Panchayat Ecosystem Restoration Initiative to access clean water is a comprehensive project aimed at revitalizing a crucial 1 acre of water source - Pond that has fallen victim to encroachment. This historically significant pond, once a lifeline for the community, now lies buried under sand dunes, significantly impacting the water supply for 316 vulnerable families in the Kaduvancheri Panchayat, Sriperumbudur Block, Kancheepuram District, Tamilnadu state, India. The primary objective of this initiative is to address the adverse effects of encroachment by restoring the pond to its original functionality, thereby ensuring sustainable water access for the affected families.

Post-encroachment removal, the pond has transformed into a non-functional sand dune, prompting a collective plea from villagers for the dredging and restoration of this vital water resource. This endeavor aims not only to benefit the current 316 families but also to secure a sustainable water source for future generations.

The project's specific objectives include:

- Dredging and Restoration: Undertaking the dredging and restoration of the pond to revive its original capacity and functionality.

- Water Resource Access for Villagers: Ensuring improved and sustainable access to clean water for the residents of the Kaduvancheri Panchayat, thereby enhancing their overall well-being.

- Groundwater Replenishment: Implementing measures to replenish and enhance groundwater levels, contributing to the long-term sustainability of the water ecosystem.

- Environmental Conservation: Integrating practices that promote the conservation of the surrounding environment, fostering biodiversity, and mitigating the impact of future threats on the pond and its ecosystem.

This initiative embodies a multi-faceted approach, addressing not only the immediate concerns related to water access but also creating a resilient and sustainable water ecosystem for the benefit of the entire community.
