Afghanistan Earthquake Relief
par INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND RELIEF FOUNDATIONTwo powerful earthquakes struck western Afghanistan on October 7, 2023, causing devastating damage and loss of life. The 6.3 magnitude quakes hit within 30 minutes of each other near the Hindu Kush mountains in Herat province. Over 2,000 people were killed, making this one of the deadliest earthquakes in Afghanistan in 20 years. More than 1,200 were injured and 1,300 homes were destroyed. While the full scale of this tragedy is still being determined, hundreds are feared dead after the earthquake devastated at least 12 villages around the city of Herat. Families living in this region bore the brunt of the disaster, as violent tremors from the nearby Hindu Kush mountains ruptured fault lines running east to west.
How is IDRF helping
As a result of our localized approach, our partner in Afghanistan has already begun the process of assessing the needs of the emergency and coordinating logistics. We believe that organizations deeply rooted in local communities are often in the best position to provide long-term support for disaster victims.
IDRF will begin by helping first responders meet survivors’ immediate needs for clean water, ready-to-eat meals, blankets, and tents. Once initial relief work is deemed manageable, we will transition to supporting longer-term recovery efforts run by our local partner in Afghanistan.
