Responding to Typhoon Hagibis

de International Medical Corps

International Medical Corps is ramping up relief and recovery efforts following the devastation from Typhoon Hagibis, one of the strongest storms to affect Japan in years. Striking the country’s Pacific coast on Saturday, October 12, the super typhoon affected Shizuoka prefecture up to Iwate prefecture, bringing historic rainfall and flooding. Nagano, Kanagawa, Tokyo (including the metro area), Saitama, Chiba, Tochigi, Ibaragi, Fukushima and Miyagi are among the hardest-hit.

Though authorities are continuing to assess the full scale of the damage, the death toll stands at 74, while more than 20,000 homes may be affected by flooding. Approximately 120,000 houses—primarily in damaged prefectures of Fukushima, Ibaragi and Nagano—are with limited water supply, and thousands still lack access to electricity. Older populations are among the most vulnerable; hospitals and homes for these populations tend to be in more rural areas, which are more isolated, with less support.

Your gift today will ensure that International Medical Corps first responders are able to provide urgently-needed health care and related services to meet the needs of families and communities affected by this crisis.

*Note for recurring donations: Once we have determined that the community can continue to respond to the after effects of this emergency without us, we will scale back our response efforts. At that time, we will redirect your future donations to where it is needed most to help us respond to future outbreaks of conflict, disease or natural disasters.
