75% of all blindness is curable or preventable. Yet millions of vulnerable people around the world continue to live in darkness. Blindness is a direct cause of poverty as it prevents people from working, going to school, or engaging in society. It impacts daily lives and the ability to contribute in the most basic of ways.

A leading cause of blindness is a cataract, a gradual clouding of the lens of the eye. Often age-related, children can be born with the condition, particularly in developing countries. But if left untreated it can result in a complete loss of sight, even though it is easily curable. Despite this, many living in impoverished communities do not have access to even basic medical care.
