United Way BC Food Security Intiatives

de UNITED WAY BRITISH COLUMBIA

Over 1 million people in BC struggle to afford groceries.
1 in 6 BC kids live in poverty.
United, we can provide the support they need to succeed.

Problem: Food Insecurity
• Food insecurity remains one of our most pressing community issues.
• In 2023, 21.8% of BC residents lived in food-insecure households and costs have only
continued to rise. (New data on household food insecurity in 2023 - PROOF (utoronto.ca))
• That means well over 1 million people in BC, including children, are struggling to afford the food they need.
• In 2025 the average Canadian household will pay $800 more for groceries than they did last year.
Key Messages:
• United Way BC Regional Community Food Hubs work collaboratively with other local
organizations to not only provide people with essentials like groceries, food hampers, and
prepared meals, but also food literacy, wellness programming, and other wrap-around
services.
• Our Food Hubs reflect the diverse neighbourhoods they feed and are a convenient, local place where families and individuals can access food and other basic needs with dignity and also develop a real sense of community.
• $150 provides a grocery voucher covering fresh produce from a local grocery store for a
family of 4 in need
Proof Points:
• Last year, with the help of donors like you, over 4.6 million culturally appropriate, nutritious
meals and hampers were provided to more than 314,000 neighbours in need.

United, we can ensure dignified access to food and essentials.
